The Role of Christianity in Colonial Oppression and Revolution

Mako Nagasawa, Boston Asian American - Area Director, presented an inspiring talk to the MIT – Asian Christian Fellowship on Good Friday, April 9, 2004. One student made a commitment to Jesus and 15 others expressed interest in a follow-up discussion.
He offered a quick historical survey of Christian non-violent movements in the 20th century. He spoke about Gandhi in India, the Black church in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, the Filipino Catholics and the peaceful overthrow of Marcos, the Catholic Solidarity movement in Poland, and Bishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa.
The target audience included the activist type person who wants to know how Jesus makes any difference in a world with injustice, seekers who are attracted to Jesus but struggle with the idea that Christianity is inseparably linked to oppression and skeptics who just assume that Christianity is inseparably linked to oppression.
How does Jesus address social evil? Read Mako Nagasawa’s answer to this question.

The Call to Public Appropriation in a Post-Modern Milieu
Re-thinking Altar Calls
Posted: 09.10.2004
A number of decades ago, we called it “hitting the sawdust trail,” a saying that came from the big tent meetings of the American revivalist era. Crowds of people would sit and stand under large tents in fields with sawdust strewn under their feet. When the call to follow Christ was given, those who went forward as a public display of faith were said to have hit the sawdust trail. In recent decades, the term “altar call” has been used to describe the portion of a service or sermon where hearers are called on to publicly profess faith in Jesus. The imagery here is of an altar at the front of a traditional church building where sinners would come in repentance. Each of these phrases comes from an era and faith-tradition that seems antiquated and removed from the post-modern milieu in which we minister today. Is there a place for publicly calling students to follow Jesus Christ? If the answer is yes, “How do we call post-modern students to declare their faith in Christ?”
