Update from Alec Hill
Madison, WI — October 27, 2006
From InterVarsity’s national president, Alec Hill:
Dear Friends,
As you know, our chapters at both Georgetown University and the University of Wisconsin-Superior have been recently de-recognized. And you are aware that we are engaged in efforts to re-establish our recognition at both campuses. A few weeks ago, I asked you to pray on our behalf and for those involved in these situations. You may be wondering about how things are going. Our students at both locations continue to meet on campus, although without official status by their universities. IV staff continue to meet with students, mentor them and advance the ministry. These are wonderful, caring, and courageous peers that we can all be proud of.
At Georgetown, Kevin Offner sits on a committee of chaplains, faculty, and students in a process to resolve the access issue. I am so grateful for the effort, time and concern expressed by Kevin and the other staff there. Although the work of the committee will take time, we are hopeful. In Wisconsin, we reluctantly needed to file suit in Federal Court since repeated attempts to work toward a solution have failed. We are waiting for our first hearing in that case. In the meantime, the leaders in the chapter at Superior are in conversations with the Student Senate in an effort to regain recognition.
It is my prayer that both chapters will be re-recognized and that, in the meanwhile, we will display Christ’s love to the campus administrators. I’ve asked you to pray about this before and ask you to continue. Please pray for our students and staff at both Georgetown and UW-Superior. Pray that they will be exemplary witnesses on campus. Pray for their protection, courage, and perseverance. Pray for our staff and students at other schools in Wisconsin as they will likely face questions and pressure from their campus administrations. Pray for the administrators of the Universities involved. And pray for those of us who are responding to questions and charges from the university and the press. We need wisdom and boldness.
Seeking Campus Renewal,
Alec
