Ten Tips for Great Large Groups | ||
1. Choose a comfortable location. Avoid the
atmosphere of a dusty lecture hall or a formal church sanctuary. It's worth a careful search.
2. Be free and available to greet people. Don't be racing around getting ready for the meeting with only moments to spare. Set up early so you can chat with new folks. 3. Avoid jargon and inside humor. Keep the new person in mind and explain things clearly. 4. Invite speakers well in advance. Respect their time by contacting them several months ahead. 5. Care for your speaker. Take him or her to dinner before the meeting, offer to pay for travel and housing (or offer an honorarium) and bring a gift to present after the talk. Good gifts include hooks, gift certificates and even campus mugs or sweatshirts. 6. Avoid sudden-death announcements. Announcements can kill a meeting. If something is worth promoting, it's worth creative effort. Project "nuts and bolts" announcements on an overhead screen before and after the actual meeting. 7. Plan music well. Good singing doesn't just happen--it takes leadership. Select and plan songs carefully. Be sure transparencies are readable. Have enough songbooks for everybody. Musicians should practice ahead of time. 8. Use media well. Be creative, but do it right. 9. Keep the meeting flowing. Be sure everyone involved is ready to come up to the front at the appropriate time. A good emcee knows the format well and has a backup plan. 10. Have fun! InterVarsity is a joyful fellowship, not a business club.
