![]() When a Friend Leaves the Faith | ||

Kelly Kissinger, student, Boise State U. The letter carrier delivered Maggie’s letter to me in late October. I had known Maggie all my life. We weren’t the closest of friends, but we liked to write each other. Maggie was a Christian who’d been dating her Mormon boyfriend for two years. Last year, he quit college to go on a Mormon mission overseas. The letter spoke of her job, her friends and her boyfriend. She said she wanted to marry him, but he hadn’t proposed. Finally, in the last paragraph of her letter, Maggie wrote, "I’ve decided to become a Mormon." My heart sank. Not Maggie too! She added, do you think?" I was glad she asked my opinion. I prayed for a few days before actually sitting at my computer to write what I thought. I knew that whatever I said, it would need to be in love. I wrote, "In Walter Martin’s booklet, he states, ‘salvation to Mormons is not a free gift from God, the result of grace wholly separate from works. It is something to be earned.’" I explained that this teaching of the Mormons was contradictory to what the Bible actually taught about grace: "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13). Humans cannot erase their own sin! Only Jesus can. I told Maggie that I loved her and didn’t want to see her leave Christianity to become Mormon. I mailed the letter with Walter Martin’s booklet, Mormonism and then prayed that God would open Maggie’s heart. A month later, Maggie returned the booklet along with a letter. She said, "I just don’t agree with you." Reading Maggie’s letter disheartened me. I’m sure that once Maggie’s boyfriend hears of her decision, a proposal will be on it’s way. Maggie and I are still friends, but we’re further apart from each other than ever before. I’ve watched several of my friends be swayed by Mormonism or become Mormons themselves. I have chosen to look on them with love and pray for them. Mormonism is one of the largest religious movements in America, and many people think that it’s just another Christian religion. We Christians need to unite in prayer that the Mormon followers’ eyes be opened to the way of truth and grace. |
