Set a Watch, O Lord
Sinuous and mute within its bony cage
The bulbous inmate tongues the ivory palisade
In mucous damp.
The uvula stirs:
A rush of air
A shaft of light --
Transformed, the rooted prisoner flicks the raised portcullis,
Shapes the words that sear, wound and curse,
Bless, caress and pray.
O Jehovah, "Keep the door of my lips."
