Do you ever think about your leadership? You interact with people who want to move in God’s direction. Here are some gut-level questions to reflect on as you think about your leadership. Your answers aren’t necessarily right or wrong, but you may gain some insights as you ponder these:

  • What’s your style when you need to call people in a direction? Do you tend to push? Do you pull? Do you pray? All of these?

  • How do you respond when people don’t seem as excited as you’d hoped? Are you easily frustrated? Do you try to find new ways to communicate vision? Do you patiently wait for people to come around to the vision?

  • How do you respond to the people around you who have obvious talent,
attractive looks or good leadership skills? Do you feel jealousy? Do you become competitive? Do you question what you can possibly have to offer? Do you admire God’s work in them?

  • How well do you listen to those you lead? Are you able to hear their concerns? Do you find yourself thinking of what you’re going to say next, even before they’re finished talking?

  • Does it bother you if you don’t get credit for an idea or event that you helped create? Do you hold your ideas loosely, trusting God to work out the best plan among the members of the group? Would you rather just be a supportive member of a team whatever the plan?

  • In what areas do you fear failure? What are God’s real expectations for you? What are his real expectations for the people you lead? (These question may require some helpful insight from a trusted friend or counselor.)

  • What characterizes your attitudes and habits when you’re not “on duty” as a leader? What do you do with your time when you’re alone? What are some things about you that you wish you could tell others?

  • In what ways do you like to be led by others? In what ways do you hear God’s own gracious call to you most clearly? How can you reflect some of that in your own leadership style?
