Ellie Laehn loves getting to know international students. In fact, she likes it so much she does it full time now--she’s the staff worker for the IVCF international student chapter at North Carolina State in Raleigh. The group of about sixty students is a blend of internationals and Americans, Christians and non-Christians. Every Friday night they meet for dinner and singing. Then they divide up into about six small-group Bible studies to take a closer look at Jesus and discuss issues of Christian faith.

But the best conversations usually take place when dessert is served at the end of the evening. "It’s very easy and natural to ask international students if they are Christians," claims Ellie. "Without hesitation many respond, ‘Not yet, but I hope to be soon.’ They aren’t embarrassed by the question like many American students are. It’s very refreshing to see their pure-hearted pursuit after God."

Many internationals are attracted to the group by their need to practice their English with new friends or by some of the fun group activities. Special events in the fall include a tour of the city and a yard sale where new arrivals to the campus can pick up furniture and household necessities. The annual autumn square dance has recently changed to an evening of line dancing. The group plans weekend trips each year to the mountains and Washington, D.C. Special dinners throughout the year explain holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter.

But many internationals that were attracted initially to the fun and caring community have found they look forward to the Bible studies most of all. "That’s where they meet the God of history, the only one who can forgive their sins," Ellie observes. "God brings international students here for a reason, and I love offering my friendship so they’ll come to know Jesus and his friendship, too."
