Tips for Putting Together an Open Forum
| ||
by Marc Papai, InterVarsity Area Director (NE Ohio) An open forum for skeptics is a presentation by a speaker, or by a panel, to an audience with diverse viewpoints. After the presentation, there is a time for questions and answers. As we put these forums together at the U. of Akron (OH), (see An Open Forum for Skeptics) we found that many professors who are Christians have given much thought to their faith. Their understanding of Christianity is frequently profound, challenging and exhilarating. We also thought it wise to work in conjunction with existing campus ministries rather than operating independently. The fact that a diverse group of Christians treated one another with kindness and respect was not lost on the skeptics who attended. We asked the professors to think of a topic they would like to discuss, recommend topics, recommend other speakers, make presentations to the campus student ministries, pray for the outreach, invite other professors and friends, and invite students. The students played a major role in these forums, making crucial decisions and contributing their thoughts and efforts. They take responsibility for outreach, being proactive in praying for the lost, the professors and the forums, initiating contact with unbelievers and inviting them to attend the forums, developing promotional material, following up on those who attend and inviting friends. Volunteers are valuable too. Anyone who would like to help with this type of ministry can be very encouraging to the believers on campus. Let people seek the Lord. The gestation period for skeptics to be born again can be very long. Perhaps the most powerful point is in Jesus’ words: "Keep on seeking, and you will find." Jesus made this promise. Do we dare take him up on it? |
