Chris Cuevas is a leader in the Chicago Pharmacy College fellowship at the University of Illinois–Chicago. During his undergraduate years at UIC, Chris was involved in the Asian-American fellowship group. As a growing Christian, Chris wanted to serve God, but he had a lot of doubts about his pharmacy major. His parents had chosen it for him. They wanted him to be a pharmacist, and he felt obligated to honor their wishes. So he enrolled in the pharmacy program to please his parents and looked for ministry opportunities through his church and I-V group as a way to please God.

Chris’s attitude began to change after he listened to a friend describe how God wants to use all the ingredients of a believer’s life, especially a vocation, to reach others with the gospel. Chris began to look for opportunities within his pharmacy program to be a witness to God’s love and grace. Last spring, Chris stumbled across one opportunity he’ll never forget.

"I was taking a patient psychology course," Chris remembers. "One day the professor introduced five people to the class, all of whom had AIDS. I am sorry to say that at first I was cynical. I had seen AIDS patients in the pharmacy where I worked and had found them very demanding and hard to deal with. But as they began to share how we as pharmacists could serve them best, many of them said that they wished their pharmacists could give them some hope. This really struck me and I began to wonder what that meant and what they really hoped for.

"After class," Chris continues, "I approached the professor with my question. He invited me to join him in his office and talk with the AIDS speakers. So I asked them what they hoped for. They talked about new medicines and a cure for AIDS. I shared with them that I was a Christian and that ultimately I have placed my hope in Jesus for this life and the next. Two of the five speakers brightened up and said that they, too, had become Christians since contracting AIDS. The next thing I knew we were all holding hands and praying together: my Jewish professor, the five AIDS speakers, and me."

Chris knows that God used him that day. This fall he is doing a pharmacy internship in a medical clinic where his job is asking patients questions about their health and medications. He looks for opportunities to give spiritual care as well, often asking patients if they would like to pray with him. They are grateful for the offer because, like the AIDS patients, they want some hope. And Chris, the student pharmacist, knows the best source.
