Tinglestad
dorm had the filthiest stairwell on the
campus of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma,
WA. Dirt and trash lined the stairs, and sometimes
the smell of vomit or urine was overpowering in
this "party" dorm. The dorm's stairs had a
reputation for being disgusting, especially on
weekends. Last spring, the members of the Bible study community in Tinglestad spent a Friday night on their hands and knees happily scrubbing away. As party-goers returned to their rooms that night, they were shocked to see their neighbors cleaning up the filth. It was a visible statement that there is a group of students in Tinglestad dorm who are actually living out what they believe in bold and humble ways. Many conversations naturally followed, pointing the way to Jesus and the eternal cleansing he offers. Another Bible study group on campus went door-to- door in three dorms, offering to clean people's rooms for them. With a vacuum cleaner and trash bags in hand, volunteers discovered surprised but grateful residents who wanted to know why they were doing this. The Christian students were able to tell them, "Because Jesus calls us to serve those around us." |
