During the first weeks of small-group life (or anytime, for that matter)  .  .  .

  1. Be warm and welcoming. Let new members know you're glad they've joined the group.

  2. Be concrete. People want to know what the small group is for and what is expected of them as members. Don't lay down a bunch of rules, but do speak positively of hopes and expectations.

  3. Be relaxed, authentic and fun. Those who enjoy the first few meetings will come back regularly. New students will appreciate confident leadership, friendship-building activities, a sense of belonging and, of course, food!
