Smith Outreach Gets Support from
the Strangest Places

One unplanned blessing during our Jesus Week was the use of a commercial campus Web site called the Daily Jolt. One Christian student opened a conversation, asking what people thought about “This is about Jesus” week, and individuals wrote thoughtful, provocative (and anonymous) comments, both pro and con, all week. Here’s one I especially liked:

“I also think that it is wonderful to express ourselves. I’m a witch, and I appreciate what you are doing. My only worry is this: I run into a lot of prejudice for my religious beliefs and practices, all of which are as peace-loving and as aimed towards goodwill and love as anything Jesus preached. I had to leave my home and my family because of prejudice and closed-mindedness and hypocritical ‘Christian’ values (not that Christian values are hypocritical, only that there are hypocrites in every religion and my family just happened to be among them). So I do tend to feel a little on guard when I see ‘This is About Jesus’ just as any gay woman would feel weird about seeing a week called ‘This is About Being Straight.’ . . . So that’s why I flinch a bit. But good luck with it all and many blessings!!”
