Building Witnessing Communities That Proclaim Good News

Campus Bible Study

But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? [Romans 10:14]

From the earliest days of the church, Christians have responded to Jesus’ charge to go into the world and make disciples. For more than sixty-five years InterVarsity has been proclaiming and demonstrating God’s love to students and faculty on college campuses. We establish and build witnessing communities that share God’s love by communicating the Gospel in clear, credible, and
compelling ways.

On todays campus a struggle rages for hearts, minds, and souls.

Today there are more than 17 million college students in the U.S. who make decisions about their beliefs, values, relationships, and careers on a daily basis. InterVarsity exists to provide a witnessing community of students and faculty in the midst of an academic culture that often opposes religious faith, particularly Christianity.

For those of us who are Christians, trusting in the guidance of a loving Creator seems obvious. But many students in secular colleges and universities are dissuaded from trusting in God’s love and guidance.

What may appear to be a well-rounded liberal arts education often in fact discourages belief in the basic biblical tenets of the Christian faith. An academic climate that is frequently hostile to the exclusive claims of Christianity, coupled with endless diversions and hedonistic influences, makes it easy for even Christian students to forsake their faith.

The Barna Group found that “most [twentysomethings] pull away from participation in Christian church, particularly during the college years.” In fact, they found that only 20% of the high school students
who grow up in churches will still be actively involved in the Christian faith at the age of 30.

InterVarsity is dedicated to helping students and faculty grow in a relationship with God that transforms their whole lives, gives them meaning, and prepares them to change the world for the better. Despite the sometimes unwelcoming culture of college campuses, we are committed to living among students and faculty and advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
