Big Events
On Saturday, September 17th, listeners to Radio Vision Cristiana – the largest Latino Christian radio station on the East Coast, learned firsthand about InterVarsity’s ministry on college campuses in northern New Jersey and New York City. Featured guests were Joanne Acevedo, North New Jersey area director, and Marie Rodriguez, campus staff member.
Latino churches are a vibrant and growing part of communities across the country. Joanne and Marie want the men and women in those churches to have a clear understanding of InterVarsity’s ministry to Latinos and other students on area college campuses. They also talked about LaFe, InterVarsity’s ministry to Latino students. Joanne and Marie hope that, after hearing about InterVarsity on the radio, more Latino students will seek out InterVarsity on their campuses.
Joanne and Marie also talked about The Big Event, InterVarsity’s fall conference for college students in the New York/New Jersey area. The Big Event is a time of recreation, reflection, and worship on October 14-16 at Lake Champion, a Young Life Camp near Port Jervis, New York.
Fall Conferences are a major opportunity for spiritual growth and fellowship development for InterVarsity chapters. “New students arrive on campus as consumers,” says Greg Jao, Regional Director for New York and New Jersey. “During Fall Conference, members become participants. We entrust these new students with skills in bible study, evangelism, cross-cultural mission, and disciplemaking. We invite them to own a bigger vision. Interacting with students from other campuses, they discover they are a part of a larger movement of God at work on college and university campuses.”
