INTERVARSITY BLACK CAMPUS MINISTRIES'
NEXT STEPS
Campus Ministry Resource
At the National Black Staff Conferences in 2007 & 2008, BCM Staff discussed several key factors
for advancing Black student ministry in InterVarsity. We focused on the following 6 areas:
· Evangelizing Black Students
· Reaching Black Students in a Multi-Ethnic Context
· Ministry to Black Men
· Ministry on Historically Black Colleges & Universities
· Ministry to Black Women
· Ministry to Black Scholars and Professionals
The HBCU and Black Scholars discussions are being followed-up by ongoing task forces. For the
remaining 4 topics, we have worked to provide a simple framework that InterVarsity Staff can
use to discern next steps in each area of ministry. The intent for BCM NEXT STEPS is to be:
Clarifying and Diagnostic--When a fellowship is having difficulty in one of these areas, discerning
the issues can often feel mysterious and intractable. This resource will help diagnose the
situation, and help the Staff understand the key issues that need to be addressed.
Short and Sweet--This resource should be easy to understand, and something that can be
worked through in a reasonable amount of time. This packet is meant to be a concise resource
that can point Staff to more extensive materials as needed.
Integrated with InterVarsity's current ministry principles--This resource aims to be consistent with
the ministry principles and tools we are already using. Much of the content should not seem
particularly "new", but should be in alignment with concepts and principles that Staff are
already using in ministry.
A guide to the next step(s) in advancing your ministry--The issues facing any particular
fellowship are far too complex to be fully addressed by a short ministry resource. Our
expectation is not that BCM Next Steps will provide all the "answers" to a fellowship's concerns.
Rather, our hope is that it wil help diagnose a fellowship's situation and direct Staff towards
places where they can receive the necessary assistance to advance their Black student ministry.
The basic format of BCM Next Steps is:
·
Explaining the significance of the topic
·
Describing several key challenges in the area of ministry
·
Diagnosing the fellowship's situation and the issues that need to be addressed
·
Assisting the staff in locating resources and determining next steps for significant
advancement in this area of ministry
Our prayer is that BCM Next Steps will be a benefit and blessing for your campus work.
