General characteristics of Emergent Worship Movement

Taken from Kevin & Brian Draper, Dan Kimball, Chuck Smith, Jr. . a concept of faith as journey . a renewed exploration of creativity . less rigid or hierarchical leadership structures . a holistic understanding of worship – our lives as worship . affirmation of personal identity . an emphasis on relationships and community . a care for the environment and an exploration of our place within creation . risks taken, unusual things tried . congregational involvement – interaction encouraged . an embrace of uncertainty . a focus on contemplation and meditation . a search for the transcendent and a sense of mystery and wonder . an emphasis on small locally based groups not big events . cultural relevance not technology for its own sake . use of symbolism that connects with people at different levels . a combination of ancient and contemporary . a commitment to change instead of self-preservation . use of elements that both sides of the brain respond to – ie experiential and intellectual . general dissatisfaction with boomer, mega-church, seeker-sensitive services. . faith is a struggle to trust in God rather than an acceptance of a set of beliefs. . Popular culture is the field into which God sends His laborers to gather His harvest, not something to be conquered or something to protect yourself from. . A general attitude would be similar to St. Francis “Preach the gospel, and when necessary use words.” . Sensitive to injustice, oppression, violence, corruption and seek to address these things in church and in their daily lives. Sacrificial lifestyles are chosen to address the needs of their neighbors and cities. . Desire for sacred space to worship . High value for freedom of movement, individual “choose your own adventure” in the midst of a communal experience. . Music leaders are not focal points of the congregation’s attention . Sermons are not the focal point of experience . Lots of time given to prayer in all forms; individual, communal, intercessory, contemplative, listening. . Communion is central experience of Jesus’ incarnation in worship.
