at Prayer in the Gospel of Luke
1. At the Baptism, 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus
also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit
descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, `You are my
Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.'
2. After a day of miracles, 4:42, 5:15-16 At daybreak he departed and went into a
deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him; and when they reached him, they
wanted to prevent him from leaving them. ...
5:15But now more than ever the word about Jesus spread abroad; many crowds would
gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. 16But he would withdraw to deserted
places and pray.

3. Before choosing his disciples, 6:12-13 Now during those days he went out to the
mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13And when day came, he

praying about? What is he asking
for?
4. At the transfi guration, 9:28-29, 35 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus
took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29And
while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling
white. ... 35Then from the cloud came a voice that said, `This is my Son, my Chosen; listen
to him!'

things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for
such was your gracious will. 22All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and
no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and
anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'
6. Before teaching them to pray, 11:1 He was praying in a certain place, and after he
had fi nished, one of his disciples said to him, `Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his
disciples.'
7. For Peter and the disciples, 22:31-32 `Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to
sift all of you like wheat, 32but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and
you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.'
8. At the point of suffering, 22:39-46 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the
Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. 40When he reached the place, he said to
them, `Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.' 41Then he withdrew from them
about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, 42`Father, if you are willing, remove this
cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done. 45When he got up from prayer, he came
to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, 46and he said to them, `Why are
you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.'
9. From the cross, 23:34 Then Jesus said, `Father, forgive them; for they do not know
what they are doing.' And they cast lots to divide his clothing...

@ke some time to think about your own prayer life in the light of Jesus' prayer life. What are some things God is teaching you about
prayer? Do you have a regular or daily time of prayer? What would you like to see changed in your prayer life (e.g., consistency, praying for
others, intimacy with God, listening, etc.)? What questions do you have about prayer? Make a note of your experiences of changes, questions,
problems, and promises regarding prayer.
