A fun game that can be played individually or in groups that helps one learn about Jewish life, religion, and culture.

Jewish Name Game

Match the words on left with their corresponding definitions in right column.

__ Shalom A. A specific agreement with
God, sealed with a

sacrifice.
__ Yom Kippur B. An sacrifice of any variety of animals or grain (if very poor) given for cleansing from sin.
__ Rabbi C. A child’s toy with four Hebrew
letters that stand for “a Great Miracle Happened There.”
__ Rosh Hashanah D. “My great Lord,” used as a
substitution for the holy Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God.
__ Ado-nai E. The capital of Israel and
the holiest city of the Jews.

__ Yiddish F. The first month in the
Jewish Year, corresponding

to June or July in the
Gregorian Calendar.
__ ( G. The Hebrew word for “peace,” a
common greeting.
__ Sabbath H. The resident expert or
teacher on Jewish law. Jesus was called this by His
contemporaries.

__ Torah M. “The Proper Way,” the Five Books of Moses, consisting of Genesis through Deuteronomy.
__ Yarmulke N. “Day of Atonement,” the tenth day of the Jewish Year, when Jews ask God for forgiveness.
__ Sin Offering O. Time from Friday sunset to
Saturday sunset that commemorates God resting after Creation Week.
__ Sh(e)ma P. A special lamp, resembling
the golden lamp stand used in the Tabernacle and
Temple in worship.
__ Jerusalem Q. The cabinet in which the
Torah scroll is kept, housed in the Most Holy Place
in the Temple.
__ Gentile R. A noisemaker used to drown
out the name of Haman, the villain of the Purim story in Esther.
__ Menorah S. Another name for the Jewish
people.

__ dreidel T. Acronym for Torah, Neviim,
K’tuvim, the three

divisions of the Jewish Bible.
__ Bar mitzvah U. A skull cap worn by Orthodox
Jews at all times.

__ Grogger V. “Hark,” or “Hear!” The
first line in the Jewish

declaration in belief in One God, in the Torah.
__ Nisan W. A celebration of a Jewish boy’s
entrance into the age of responsibility, 13 years old.
