Keeping the Best Wine for Last
The Gospel today is the wedding at Cana, the familiar story of Jesus
changing water into wine. This was His first miracle, and one that was
encouraged by His mother. The chief steward of the wedding came to the
groom and embarrassed him by saying, “Everyone brings out the choice wine
first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to
drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
1) How often do we reserve the finest wine until last?
2) Of those things that are best in ourselves: our talents and gifts, our
concern for other people, our inherent goodness, do we allow these
virtues to be seen by other people, or do we hide them?
3) Is it fear that stops us from revealing who we are to other people? To
our peers?
4) What are the ways that we can grow in our faith and in our human
development as Christians?
5) Since it was actually the power of Jesus that brought out the best
wine at the wedding, is it probable that the best that is within us
can be brought out through the power of Jesus at work in our lives?
