Brief description of NSO plan for outreach.

Back to School Bash
Saturday before freshmen move-in
1pm-10pm

1 PM- Ultimate Frisbee or Frisbee Golf- Make Iron-on IV T-Shirts

3PM:
Come together for Vision Briefing and overview of NSO plans (why and what
NSO is) (1 hour)
Bible study Ezekiel 34:1-16 with applications to NSO (30 min)

Overview of NSO: (10-20 min)

1. Goals: Contact 600 students (go over J. Rockeman’s paper Casting the Net Wide1), follow up within 48 hours 2. Tables- Making contact- where & when- 3. 1st large Group- greeting new people 4. Events 5. Follow up 6. Integration- these people will be your new friends & may be sitting next to you 1 year from now
Have people share about how they got involved in IV (10 min)
Pray in pairs for new students (5 min)

(Break)

4:30 PM
Communication Skill Training (1 hour)

1. Wacky skit (or movie clip) about a conversation gone bad (5 min) 2. Short talk on how to have a conversation (8-10 min) a. “Be interested, not interesting” b. 5 typical questions (surface to deeper) c. Have people pick some questions they might use to keep a conversation going with someone they don’t know well yet. d. Using the person’s appearance (or their room’s appearance) as conversation clues 3. Bad and Good Example of how to work at the outreach table2 (skit form & debrief; 5-7 min) a. Don’t sit down; smile; engage with walkers; don’t read paper; etc.. b. “Are you interested in a Christian Fellowship?” Have you ever been involved in a Christian group before?” 4. Bad and Good examples of how to welcome new people at the first large group (skit & debrief: 7-10 min) a. Have people role play, taking turns being the new person. Encourage them to use the questions they came up with above to keep the conversation going. (5 min each way; 10 min total) 5. Bad and Good examples of how to follow someone up (skit & debrief; hand out and go over Helps in Contacting New Students article: 7-10 min) a. Too brief; too negative, “you probably too busy to come to my Bible study but here’s a flyer”; how to wear out your welcome. b. Have people role play, taking turns being the person being followed up. (5 min each way; 10 min total) 6 PM—Break for Pizza3 7 PM—Mock 1st Large group Rehearse the entire large group (minus the speaker) from name tags to new person contact cards4 to songs to skits to announcements. When it’s time for the speaker go into a 45 minute Concert of Prayer for NSO. (this could be a prayer walk on campus).

Pray that the LORD will be glorified by the New Student Outreach.
Pray for students to come to faith through NSO.
Pray for the New Student Outreach Coordinator.
Pray for the freshmen.
Pray for your outreach plans.
Pray for visibility on campus.
Pray for the logistics of your outreach plan.
Pray that the whole chapter will catch a vision for the plan.
Pray for the participation of your whole chapter.
Pray for relationships to be built between chapter members and new
students.
Pray for the execution of your outreach plan.
Pray that people will be followed up within 24 (or 48) hours of contact.
Pray for those contacted by name (if you know any yet).
Pray for people to get involved in Small Group Bible Studies.
Pray that your NSO has helped you to engage your campus with the Gospel.
Pray that the LORD has been glorified through your NSO.

9 PM – Socialize or publicize/ sidewalk chalk the campus

[1] Summary: if you contact 100 people (names) you will get about 20 new
members and 4 or 5 new leaders, so cast your net wide.
[2] Actually set up your outreach table, that way you’ll know if you have
everything you’ll need and might get people excited about NSO
[3] Have a sign up sheet for working at the various outreach tables and
recruit people during dinner
[4] Assign half of the people in the group to be new people (give them a
special arm band or something), so the other half can keep practicing being
hospitable.
