Greeks At UNC – Greensboro
By Courtney Hatcher
The Campus
UNC-Greensboro is a public state school. It has approximately 13,000
undergrads and a small Greek population of about 700 students. The students
are almost exclusively from North Carolina and they are predominantly
middle class.
The Challenges
The campus has a high number of nominal Christians who do not see a need to
follow Jesus during most days of the week. There is a lack of student
leaders, especially those who are mature in their faith. There seems to be
a lot of obstacles and even, perhaps, spiritual warfare in reaching
fraternity men.
Ministry Contacts and Opportunities
There is an undergrad chapter on campus. The Greek Life office is somewhat
helpful to us. We have three student leaders, and approximately ten regular
attendees.
What We Are Doing
We have a weekly large group meeting that is formatted as a Bible study.
The topic is “Who is Jesus?” so it also functions as a GIG because of the
large numbers of non-Christians who attend. We are doing outreach primarily
by inviting, networking and publicity.
The Vision
I plan to build from the large group meeting we already have operating. I
plan to build up the core of regular attendees and to eventually plant a
Bible study/GIG in each Greek chapter. I gain the most hope from the ways
I’ve seen God at work-the soil here is very fertile and I have seen many
students transformed already.
God is Working
I have seen God transform students. I have been here for two years and
already I have seen four students become followers of Jesus, two students
take big steps to deepen their walk with Jesus and six students equipped
and motivated for witness. This is amazing in such a short period of time
and it gives me great satisfaction and hope!
Help Needed
I need lots of encouragement to persevere as I plant at this school, along
with the work at Wake Forest. It can be discouraging at times, and it can
be stressful because I never know what to expect. It is uncharted
territory, so good advice and training from those further ahead would be
invaluable, especially specific to the Greek context. I think planters just
need lots of prayer and encouragement in general!
