Franklin Pierce College
by Tom Brink
The Campus
Franklin Pierce College is a small liberal arts college in Rindge, NH. It
is a lower-level private school, a few levels down from a Middlebury. It
has many non-New Hampshire students and a higher than average percentage of
minority students. Located in a rural setting, it is very isolated.
The Challenges
At first it was the Campus Ministry department that resisted a group on
campus. We found it was also difficult to keep a staff person in such a
rural, lonely place. Also this campus is a very dark place. I have always
felt that there has been a significant spiritual barrier to the gospel on
campus.
Ministry Contacts and Opportunities
There are now two Christians in the administration: in Admissions and PR.
But the key to recent ministry has been that our NE InterVarsity camp is
only five miles from FPC. Two years ago the camp director hired a camp
staff person who was also gifted for work as a CSM. This is a difficult
campus to raise enough funding to support a full-time staff worker, but she
came and started a ministry with the help of another staff at camp who
assists with worship. In addition, the new women’s Lacrosse coach is a
Christian and wants to start a ministry with athletes.
What We Are Doing
It took a year to get a Bible study established and the students have many
socials together.
Now there is another Bible study starting for athletes.
Our Vision
My vision is for these two Bible studies to gain momentum and grow next
year and begin establishing student leaders.
What God is Doing
Our entire New Hampshire staff team gathered at FPC in November 2005 for a
day of prayer on campus. We found out some very significant barriers to the
gospel and prayed hard. Since then it seems like the walls have come down
some. We even had one conversion in February and another male student is
very close to the kingdom.
Help Needed
We need help with finances and the continued perseverance of the staff
there.
