Santa Rosa Junior College
By Michelle Silvashy
The Campus
Santa Rosa Junior College (CA) is a commuter campus with more than 35,000
students. There are about twelve other Christian faith-based clubs, one
being a church plant that draws many Christian students from their church
and friends.
The Challenges
Students are typically not on campus except for classes and they try to set
up classes one right after another. Students are busy with jobs, maybe
kids, and involved in their churches. This makes it tough to set up club
meetings or have “fellowship” time outside of Bible Study or Large Group.
Campus Contacts
Supportive contacts include some pastors, a few faculty and several
students.
What We’re Doing
We have Bible study weekly, and also do contact evangelism, GIGs, tabling,
and special events.
The Vision
We are going to try moving from a weekly Bible study to a rotating large
group one week and a Bible study the next week. We want to develop it into
a “bigger” event with a set worship team, leaders, etc. We are recruiting
students now from the high school church groups who will be on our campus
next year so that we can develop them and train them throughout the coming
year as they serve in the fellowship.
God is Working
We have seen about five or so students in Bible study most weeks and they
are even stretching themselves (for at least one semester, reluctantly) in
sharing their faith and inviting people to Bible study. Plus we are seeing
that students from the local churches are getting excited to partner with
us next year, and we’re excited to be building more bridges with churches
too.
Help Needed
I’m not sure what help we need.
