KALAMAZOO COMMUNITY COLLEGE
By Jamie Marshall
The Campus
Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Michigan has about 10,000 students.
Like other community colleges, it is a commuter campus with students who
don’t hang around very long. We have not had student contacts or an ongoing
ministry until this year.
What We’re Doing
It has been an exciting year! We started with one student, Amanda, who went
to the School of Leadership Training last summer and came home ready to
start a Bible study. Amanda invited anyone and everyone she knew. She even
went to local churches to get the word out. The first Bible study was
attended by four students and it just kept growing from there. By the end
of the first semester there were more than 20 students attending weekly. We
also began a weekly prayer meeting during the first semester.
The Vision
Amanda and I have been meeting weekly all year for discipleship. She and I
have both encouraged members of the Bible study to start GIGs. Two people
have indicated that they would be interested in starting a GIG with their
friends.
The Bible study is big enough to break off into two smaller groups. Amanda
and I are also working on selecting leaders for next year, and I’m praying
for three to four leaders on campus next year to replace Amanda. We hope to
have at least ten students attend the small-group leaders’ training over
the summer.
Even though Amanda will be gone next year, I’m looking forward to what the
Lord has in store for the students on this campus who will seek him.
