Themes and Applications in Amos
1) Worship
a. Who: God, Yahweh, Lord of Hosts, mightier than the mightiest, holy,
just, Judge, destroyer, merciful, patient, Savior
b. How: According to His character, in word and obedience, requiring
justice in our lives outside of worship
i) What God do we worship?
ii) Is our worship worthy and acceptable to God?
iii) How do we know God is pleased with our worship?
2) Justice and Righteousness
a. Personal:
i) Conspicuous consumption and spending
ii) Truth and deception
iii) Personal holiness
iv) What and in whom do we trust? What do we value supremely?
b. Public:
i) We are our brother’s keeper.
ii) What does it mean to be a Christian citizen?
iii) How do we bring our faith to bear on every sphere of human
activity (economics, politics, law, welfare systems, etc.)?
3) God’s Covenant
a. God’s Expectations for His own:
i) Do you live distinctly from the culture around you?
ii) What effect does God’s mercy in Christ have on your daily
living?
iii) Do you or others claim membership in Jesus’ covenant without
public and private proof?
4) God’s Word
a. Our view:
i) Do we see God’s Word as an expression of God’s grace, an utter
privilege?
ii) Are we really people who know and love Scripture?
iii) Do we immerse ourselves in Scripture? Do our lives reflect
this?
