The Survey as an Evangelism Tool

The survey is meant to be a tool for evangelism, to promote and develop
evangelistic discussions, both one and one and small group.

How to invite someone?

“Hi, John. You remember that I am involved with Inter-Varsity? We are
doing a survey of UCSC students on some beliefs and values. How would you
feel about filling one out for me? It doesn’t take very long—it’s just 15
questions…” “No, I’m on my way to class now.” “That’s fine. I’ll give it to you now and you can fill it out (in
class or) whenever. I’ll come by this before dinner to pick it up.”

Later— “So John, did you get a chance to fill out the survey?”

“Oh, yeah… Here it is. You asked some interesting questions.” “Well, I’m not going to look at this. [Put survey into envelope.] But
I would be enjoy hearing about what you thought. Especially about the one
about… [North American society, racism, etc.] Are you going to dinner
now?

After dinner— “Oh, John, one more thing. We are going to analyze the data next week,
and we have been thinking of having a discussion in the lounge with some
others in Porter about the results and implications of the survey. I’ll let
you know when we are going to have that, probably a Tuesday night in about
two weeks.”

“Thanks. I’d love to hear what other students said…”

THE GOALS:

1. To relate the gospel to issues that people think about and to
values that people hold. To incarnate the gospel in familiar terms. To get
into significant discussion about these issues. What is the relationship
between the question about friendship between men and women and the gospel? 2. To get to know people better. Are you really interested in what
people think about these issues? Could you have predicted the answers of
your friend, roommate, etc? If not, why not? How can we try to bring these
issues up more naturally at other times? 3. To get to know the campus culture better, as we analyze and discuss
the data we take.

FOLLOW UP

Follow up is the most important part of the process. Don’t simply get
their answers, but invite them to dialogue and to further discussion. If
some are closed to this, others will not be closed. Follow up on those who
express openness, even eagerness to know what you or other students think
about these issues.

THIS IS A TOOL

This is not HOW evangelism will happen this quarter; this is merely
one tool in our learning how to be doing evangelism. With the survey we can
learn 1) how to be interested in the ideas, beliefs and values of others,
2) how to relate the gospel to significant issues, and 3) how to be bold
and to share our own beliefs and why we believe what we do. Student Survey
