It must be what Paul (and the other Apostles) said is the Gospel. You might be surprised to learn that the Gospel is not about you so much about God and his Son Jesus Christ. Asian American views on Ethnic Specific Ministry and Multi-ethnic Ministry This paper will address the two main types of Asian American ministry that we have in InterVarsity: ethnic specific and multiethnic. (Within the category of ethnic specific fellowships, they are Pan Asian American, Korean American or Chinese American). We will talk about the Scriptural basis for these fellowships, presenting two views as well as to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the two types of ministries. This paper is intended for Asian American staff and students. Though it may relate to other situations as well, it is not intended to address issues of all ethnic specific ministries. Before we start, we want to start by introducing ourselves a bit and sharing some about our background, and why we are writing this paper.  (more info)

Engaging Culture Unit 3: Ministry Strategies This is the third of three parts of training, designed to help people engage with an increasingly postmodern culture. This is the heart of where the first two units are heading, where I build off the bases of images of leadership and the history of our culture towards effective strategies for ministry (at any level or context). These are a bit general, but I think are important correctives to things we often miss. I try to draw most of what I think out of Scripture, so this really isn't anything new, just a correction of misperceptions people have. Four Barriers to Evangelism This file takes the many reasons that people don't witness and organizes them into four categories of barriers. The barrier categories are readiness, timing, lifestyle, and shame. Each has several subcategories. Each barrier is exhaustively discredited. The goal for the listener is that they would leave having no reason to not live out their life as a witness. This material can be used for an evangelism talk or training.  (more info)

Genesis 1-3 People have grappled over the Genesis creation narrative for hundreds of years. Some see it as an un-historical myth, others see it as a literal, factual record of the beginning of the universe and humanity. Some people believe in a literal “6-24 hour creation days” and that the earth is somewhere between six-thousand and ten-thousand years old. Others believe that God created the universe in “6-epoch length periods of time” and that the earth is billions of years old. Some believe in neither. I think that both views are missing the point. Often what happens is that we focus on peripheral themes, missing fundamental themes in the story. It is safe to say that historical and scientific issues were not in the mind of the author when he recorded the Genesis creation story in approximately 2000 BC. So what was on the mind of the author? How are we to understand this story? What is it trying to tell us? How does it relate to me? More importantly, how does this story fit into my story-where is the juxtaposition?  (more info)

GIG team integration outline The GIG team is a response to the need for students to share the good news of Jesus' radical love to others. We have found that those who are set apart to work solely on evangelism seldom do and those not set apart for evangelism seldom work on evangelism. The result is little to no evangelism. Our response is a hybrid GIG team that asks every leader to do evangelism but only holds them accountable for shorter periods of time. It's worked great in Tampa.  (more info)

Housing decision-making forms Applying the principles and method outlined in a "Process for Learning to Choose Wisely" to a recent decision, we took some of the pain out of comparing apples with oranges - and the math involved. The top worksheet was the basis for notes before, during and after visiting a property. The template worksheet categorizes and prioritizes observations according to our values. Once it's finalized for the decision at hand, it gets copied to subsequent worksheets, one for each scenario, often including the status quo. On Reasons and Believing the Christian Message In this talk I investigate whether it's rational or reasonable to believe the Christian message. Do we need evidence to believe? If not, why not? But if so, what counts as evidence? Who decides? On what basis? I want to address the subject of whether bright, thoughtful people—such as people who teach and study in the universities of the world—people who do not yet believe the Christian message—people such as these, do they have good reason to believe? Hopefully this talk will help Christians better understand these issues as well. For thoughtful Christians, of course, the issue is should they believe what they have believed? This is a little piece of religious epistemology and apologetics.  (more info)

Sketch 12 Motivation for Discipleship Sketches of Leadership. Mark 8:34-38, Mark 10:28-31, Mark 10:41-45. The paradox promises in the gospel: If you want life, lose it. If you want security, leave it. If you want to be great, become a servant. Jesus did all these things, and he calls us to the life he lived, for the same reasons. We are created to want these things. Ministry is the life-losing, security-leaving, servant-path-following way to receive from God the things we deeply desire, in a paradoxical life of faith.  (more info)

Contrasts worldly and godly ambition, defining each and giving lots of brief case examples to illustrate the differences. Using Your Time for the Kingdom - NSO Training Game Feel free to edit the squares to reflect your campus/regional culture. The game is designed to be frustrating because it's impossible to fit everything in that we would ideally want. That teaches the skills of prioritization and overlapping (e.g. having dinner while hanging out with freshmen). I'd suggest having groups work independently and away from each other, so that even if a group gets an aha moment and realizes nothing is preventing them from stacking one square on top of another, other groups don't find out immediately. The debriefing is especially important in this game.  (more info)

What Do College Students Think About Religious Pluralism? This is the front section of my doctor of ministry thesis at Princeton Theological Seminary. It includes the abstract and table of contents. This study looked at the perspectives of students from different religious groups and their views of coming together with people of other faiths. This should be especially helpful for those interacting with various religious groups on an interfaith/multifaith basis. The rest of the thesis is available upon request (pvsorrentino@amherst.edu).  (more info)

Worship As our Living Sacrifice This is an Article I wrote for my church newsletter. It talks about how the word living sacrifice connotes life and not death. So what we offer God in our worship should be alive. Also that Worship as organic means that it is very diverse and should be interwoven into our daily lives.  (more info)
