Prospective Staff Information

InterVarsity's Black Campus Ministries Staff (March 2003)

From Boston to Austin, from Moraga to Miami, from graduate schools in Atlanta to community colleges in Los Angeles, Black Campus Ministries (BCM) of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is developing Black students (ALL students of the African diaspora in the United States, including Afro-Caribbean, Afro-South American, African national, Multi-racial, and African American peoples) to serve God's purposes. Composed of over 60 Black staff (and many other non-Black staff), BCM is committed to "establishing witnessing communities who love God, God's Word, God's people, and God's purposes in the world." These staff fulfill this purpose by firstly pursuing the Lord in devotion and loyalty to Him. Subsequently, they reach out to the campus community with the good news of Jesus Christ, seeking men and women that would be drawn to Jesus and to His service. Currently, Black staff are serving in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

BCM has a legacy of alumni in a variety of professions and vocations—missionaries, pastors, bishops, business people, entrepreneurs, and government officials to name a few. BCM is connected to many Black churches in a common goal of helping Black young people know Jesus and reach their potential. Bible studies, worship services, one-to-one discipleship experiences, videos, gospel rap, weekend conferences, and summer missions trips are among the tools we use to develop Black student ministry. In partnership with other ethnicities in InterVarsity, we move forward in faith to raise up a new generation of Black leaders with moral, spiritual, and personal integrity.

Listed below are contexts and job profiles for potential Black staff in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship:

  1. Historically Black Colleges: Positions for those who are committed to the gospel as it relates to Black culture and people in this all-Black context.
  2. Black Gospel Choirs: Positions for those who can love the Lord with music, and who are open to developing a witnessing community in the context of a gospel choir.
  3. Urban Commuter Campus: Positions for those who can be good networkers, who are willing to work with churches, and who can establish ministry on commuter campuses.
  4. Black Students On Traditionally White Campuses: Positions for those with a solid sense of their own Biblical ethnic identity to connect with Black students in Black and non-Black InterVarsity groups.
  5. Non-Black Students: Positions for those with growing appreciation and security in their own ethnic identity and a sense of calling to college students. They need familiarity and comfort in the larger society and a willingness to grow in serving a variety of students.
  6. Campus Faculty and Graduate Students: Positions for those who have an appreciation of the graduate student world, and who will work with these audiences in the areas of spiritual formation, community, faith/learning/practice, and evangelism/service.
  7. Nurses Christian Fellowship: Positions for those who have nursing degrees who can help to bring the good news of Jesus to the nursing profession (to students and to professionals).
  8. Area Directors: These men and women serve the campus staff. Spiritually mature and experienced in the work of the Kingdom, these directors are spiritual leaders, campus/community networkers, ministry strategist, support-raisers, and team organizers/mobilizers.
  9. Regional Directors: These staff directors serve area directors and a geographical team (one of fourteen in IVCF). With similar gift mixes to the area directors, yet having broader organization management responsibilities, they serve on a larger team of men and women who direct the campus ministry of InterVarsity.
  10. InterVarsity's National Service Center and InterVarsity Press: Positions for those who are willing to work in either Madison, Wisconsin, or Downers Grove, Illinois, serving students and staff in a variety of departments--human resources, information/internet services, multimedia services, office administration, and so on.

Qualifications for these positions include:

  • Love, appreciation, and understanding of the college/university setting;
  • Being a strong team player, willing to work collaboratively with students and/or staff colleagues;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • A demonstrated ability to raise funds for self/staff/programs;
  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university;
  • An annual affirmation of InterVarsity's Statement of Agreement.

For more information on how you can be a part of this dynamic ministry, email or call your local InterVarsity area director, or contact the Interim National Director of Black Campus Ministries, Rev. Paula R. Fuller (608-443-3782).
