In May, a Global Project was held at a minorities college in our area of East Asia. There were many memorable times (tye-dying shirts, visiting nearby towns, lots of good food!), and there were some provocative moments (a class session on religions in East Asia where people from East Asia and Canada shared about how they came to believe in Him).
After that particular session, a student told his partner and some of the others “I don’t believe in anything, but if I did, I would believe in Jesus.” In the days that followed, he continued to ask questions and had a few conversations with the leader of the Canadian team, who happened to be from East Asia. This student soon decided to put his faith in Him, beginning his journey with Him after just one week in the exchange program! When asked what he wanted to do most during the last three weeks of the program he said, “I want to learn as much as I can from the Bible before my partner leaves.” During the last three weeks of the program, his partner and others spent much time talking and studying with him, helping him to take his first steps in following Him as part of a community. At the end of the program, as he gave his comments during the farewell ceremony, he said, “During this program, my partner and I have become Brothers.”
At another university in town there have been two small groups of students meeting to study His Word. In one of these groups, one student who had been learning about Him for a long time came to study a couple weeks ago with some news to share. At the end of our study, as we spent time taking requests for intercession, he told us that he had decided to put his trust in Him. A turning point that he mentioned was that recently, someone had asked him why he had decided not to join the Party. He had been wrestling with that decision, along with his decision to start following Him, and he felt that he could not follow both the Party and Him. So, after thinking about his friend’s question for a moment, he said, “I didn’t join because I’m a Christian.” That evening at our study he interceded for the first time as a brother in Him!
