City Tours for Newly Arriving International Students
Here is how an InterVarsity staff worker among international students in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA describes the special tour that InterVarsity sponsors each year for newly arriving international students: http://www.intervarsity.org/ism/article/4318
Similarly there was a "Shopping" tour of the city of Columbia, Missouri USA for new arrived international students there this past fall of 2005. Here is a brief summary of what happened: On August 10, 2005 internationals met with InterVarsity staff and volunteers for a three-hour tour of the city from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
They arrived at 1:45pm at the Campus ISSS Office on the lower level of the Memorial Union North. They were given brief instructions on how to ride the bus. Students then left at 2:15pm from the front of the Memorial Union to catch the bus to Columbia Mall. They shopped on the Mall with volunteers alongside of them to show them where things were in the Mall. At the end they caught the bus back to campus about 4:15pm.
The above instructions are simple enough that concerned American volunteers in any campus community could do a similar city tour for newly arriving internationals on campus each fall. Try it out and see!
