"Making Room" (IVP)
Occasionally Inter Varsity Press publishes a book that is at the very core of what the ministry to internationals is all about. This book, authored by Christine D. Pohl and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. in 1999 is such a book.
"Making Room" is a fairly thorough examination of the history and importance of hospitality, and more specifically the tradition of hospitality in its varied forms both in Biblical times and throughout the history of the church (until recent centuries when it has been largely lost as a ministry of the church).
Powerful teaching is given in the opening chapters of the book in its emphasis on the "alien" or "stranger," and the responsibility of the people of God in both Old and New Testament times to open their homes and hearts to these people as included among the orphans, widows, poor and disenfranchised.
International students, though not often poor, are almost always away from home without the support networks of their family and friends, and therefore in great need of basic hospitality, which becomes a witness to the love of God and the truth of the Gospel when offered by the people of God in Christ's name.
