Teaching English

Are you interested in finding ways to Teach English as a Second Language (TESL)? Here are samples of training courses offered for preparing ESL teachers.

There are many opportunities for getting training preparation in various academic institutions and degree programs. Here's a sample of a short term one (2+ weeks, e.g. July 8-26, 2002) at a Christian institution which is reasonable in cost and offers a "certificate of completion" at the end. Apply to BIOLA University at:
Phone: 562-903-4844
Email: kitty_purgason@peter.biola.edu

"David Ministries" helps local campus groups plan a special "Bridge of Love" ESL Training Seminar. For more information on this seminar and related materials, please visit their website or call them at:
Phone: 719/591-2227
Email: esl@daviministries.org
Website: http://esl.davidministries.org

A Christian Teacher's Manual and Student Workbook have also been produced by "English Outreach," and distributed by The Navigators, to help teachers "learn how to teach English Using the Bible" and to help students gain "a fast way to learn English." Both together, with shipping costs, are about $30+ (USD). Write to:
The Navigators
P.O. Box 6000
Colorado Springs, CO 80934
Phone:719/594-2482 or 719/598-1212

Other programs and resources on TESL can be identified by ordering the ALTA ESL Resource Center Catalog, the largest source of ESL books and materials available.

One of them is the "Finishers Project," an offshoot of Campus Crusade for Christ, which focuses on opening doors for people "later-in-life," especially "empty nesters," finding opportunities for teaching English. The "ESL-JOBS.COM" website is a very helpful introduction to this group: http://esljobs.gospelcom.net/about/index.html

Educational Services International (ESI). This group is located in the greater Los Angeles area and like the above, sends TESL instructors to many countries where ESL is needed.
Email: teach@esimail.org
Website: http://esiadventure.org

Educational Resources and Referrals - China (ERRC). This group, based in Berkeley, CA similarly sends many to China to teach English.
