The Rise of Global Christianity
"In December 2002, two dozen journalists gathered at the Pier House in Key West, Florida, at the invitation of the Ethics and Public Policy Center for a two-day seminar. Its purpose was to enhance journalistic understanding of current religious and cultural issues.
"The session from which this "Center Conversation" is drawn featured historian Philip Jenkins and journalist David Brooks."
"As the cover article of its October 2002 issue, the Atlantic Monthly ran an excerpt from Philip Jenkins's book The Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity. His argument is about not only the rise of global Christianity but also how this may affect such large areas as U.S. foreign policy, the situation of Islam today, and problems of international conflict. Philip Jenkins is Distinguished Professor of History and Religious Studies at Penn State University.
"The respondent to Jenkins talk is David Brooks, senior editor of The Weekly Standard and a commentator on the PBS "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer."
This conversation is of particular interest to those of us involved with international students since it points out the strategic significance of these students who will mature and exercise influence in the new world, particularly for Christians the world of the church, which is emerging in this new century.
