International Coffee House Provides More Than Drink
The International Coffee House (ICH) has continued with
its tradition of serving the social, physical and spiritual
needs of students. More than 100 students, volunteers and
staff have crowded into the basement of Grace Bible Church
each Friday evening this fall. They have enjoyed an eclectic
blend of music from our Japanese/American band. Mennonite,
Assembly of God, Covenant and other churches have prepared
and served modest but delicious meals, further expressing
the oneness in Christ we long to demonstrate. Many
internationals have commented that the ICH is the place
where they come to meet their friends and one group, led by
the Mexican students, often goes out after our doors close
to dance and talk. A few have told me that the ICH has
become the "happening place" to be on Fridays!
In a quiet, low-key manner we are stimulating students'
thinking about spiritual things. Even on evenings when we
have had topics as benign as "Food," "Staying Healthy in
America" and "Consumerism and Greed in America," some of the
questions in the discussion groups have led students to
consider the spiritual dimension of their lives. Students
are well aware that our staff and volunteers are Christians,
so it comes as no surprise that we would ask such questions.
Though we offer other options besides organized discussions,
most choose to enjoy the opportunity to practice their
English, build friendships and have serious discussions in a
relaxed atmosphere.
Country Focus Nights have become big events for the ICH.
Twice a quarter, we turn the evening over to a group of
students from one country or a geographic region. Our recent
India Night attracted over 140, with about twenty-five
wives, recent graduates and expatriates helping the new
students with the food and program. They enthusiastically
presented the best of their culture. These events have
helped our volunteers and staff better connect with
students, giving us the ability to speak the truth of God
into another's culture.
