Evangelism occurs implicitly and explicitly in our
fellowship. Of the international students that have become
growing disciples of Jesus through our fellowship, 100% of
them attached themselves to our fellowship before they
committed themselves to Christ. This remains true even if
they transfer to other institutions or graduate. We have
encouraged evangelism as part and parcel of the discipleship
of the community. As a community that is called together by
God, we expect the Lord to call out leaders from our
Christ-centered witnessing community of international
students.
We've discovered that this approach means that we must
allow for a great deal of ambiguity in the early stages of
discipleship. This lack of clarity has some New Testament
basis. The earliest community of Jesus' followers (e.g.,
Mark. 3:13-14) had only limited knowledge of Jesus'
identity, but their understanding was adequate to commit
their lives to him and each other. Likewise, in Fresno we
try not to assume anything regarding conversion, church
membership, or a "Protestant-Catholic" dichotomy. As a
result, international students commit themselves to Jesus
because they detect his life in our community and not
because they have a fully-orbed doctrine of the Trinity or
the Atonement.
Our fellowship of internationals at Fresno State is
centered in Jesus Christ. We relate to Jesus; we relate to
each other. Our relationships with Jesus and each other
allow new commitments to Christ to develop and strengthen.
Our beliefs in Christ grow through Scripture study and
prayer. Our community life introduces and reinforces the
importance of the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
