Writer's Guidelines for The Well
Who We Are
The Well is a ministry of InterVarsity's Women in the Academy & Professions. It is a web-based newsletter designed to support women in graduate and professional schools and women faculty as they seek, in their full and complex lives, to be followers of Christ. The newsletter provides relevant articles, life stories, mentoring, discussion forums, and more. We hope it helps women share their stories and find spiritual support and practical help. The Well is a virtual gathering place for the women of InterVarsity's Graduate & Faculty Ministries and a resource for those ministering to them.
Audience
Our target audience is Christian women who are in or have been in graduate and professional school. However, we believe the experiences and struggles of Christian women in the academic world are largely shared by those who do not know Christ. We strive to publish articles that are appropriate to send on to colleagues and others who do not share a Christian faith, but who may benefit from the counsel or information provided.
Authors
Authors may be men or women. If anonymity is desired, consideration can be made to have the article posted anonymously or with a pseudonym, with only the editorial staff knowing the identity of the author.
Style
Although we are serving an academic audience, we choose not to have a formal academic voice. We appreciate writing with a personal voice and, even in an informative article, appreciate personal examples. Although we address a primarily Christian audience, articles should avoid Christian jargon.

Features
In Focus1500-2500 words
We seek to provide spiritual nourishment and thoughtful and practical articles for women in graduate school, professional school, or on faculty. We welcome articles from a wide variety of disciplines that inform and challenge our readers and articles that address the unique challenges and joys these women experience, including those dealing with the academy, professions, relationships, singleness, career decisions, and child-bearing and child-raising in the context of study and work. We encourage articles written from a personal viewpoint.
Reflections 300-600 words
"Reflections" are meditations and stories about women's lives as they seek to follow Christ in the academy and professions. The "Reflections" column is anchored by Sharon Gartland, Women in the Academy & Professions National Director, but we welcome guest "Reflections" describing insights into this life or describing God's faithfulness in the midst of it.
Voices 300-600 words
"Voices at The Well" is a place of introduction — a place to meet others who are interested in the ideas discussed and lives described at The Well. Tell us about yourself. Use our online form to begin the discussion. Your answers may be featured in our "Voices at The Well" column. If so, we will follow up by email or phone to complete the interview.
Dear Mentor up to 100 words
What would you like to ask a mentor? What topics would you like to hear addressed by our mentor team? If you would like to be included as a mentor, we would love to talk with you. Please send relevant information and a writing sample to introduce yourself.
Good Brothers 300-600 words
Good brothers are men who recognize the goodness of God's creation in their sisters and seek to encourage and call out the full God-given potential of the women they regularly encounter in their work, home, and ministry life. This feature highlights men who are examples of "good brothers" and includes practical ways in which they partner and interact with women. This section is also a place for men to offer thoughtful words of encouragement and blessing to women, as well as provide male insight. We welcome male and female authors to this section.
Again, to inquire about submitting an article, contact Marcia Bosscher. Thank you for your interest in writing for The Well.
