This is uploaded a second time (see 8002) so that it can be used both as thumbnail and full image. Living Water: From Fear to Faith (2)

God Holds My Hand

“There is an alarming number of angles from which fear can ambush us,” says David Ivaska in Be Not Afraid. Whatever the source, fear can leave us depressed and disabled, in need of God’s presence as described in this study. You can use the studies as posted here or, if you prefer a print copy, we have made a pdf available at the end of this article. Set aside a special place and time to reflect on the Bible passage and accompanying questions and allow God’s spirit to teach and encourage you. Take to heart these discoveries of God’s promises. May you find yourself moving from fear to faith.

God Holds My Hand

So do not fear, for I am with you;
   do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
   I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

For I am the LORD, your God,
   Who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear,
   I will help you.

so that people may see and know,
   may consider and understand,
that the hand of the LORD has done this.
(Isaiah 41:10, 13, 20; see also Isaiah 41:1-20)

Picture the different ways people use their hands to help someone who is afraid: an arm around the shoulder, two hands holding another’s hands firmly and compassionately, a hand outstretched to grasp the other’s hand or shoulder, an open hand offering needed food or money, a hand leading another through darkness or danger, arms sweeping underneath someone to lift them up and carry them to safety, hands clapping to warn of danger, hands folded in prayer for another, hands on a head seeking God’s blessing and anointing, a hand writing a note of encouragement. Hands are wonderful tools for dispelling fear!

How does Isaiah use the image of a hand to describe God’s deep care for us?

Think of a situation today when you might need (or have already needed) God’s hand to stay your fear. Imagine how God’s hand might touch you today.

Think of someone you know whose heart is fearful. How can you reach out your hand to them today?

Precious Lord, take my hand,
Lead me on, help me stand;
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Thru the storm, thru the night,
Lead me on to the light.
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
(Thomas A. Dorsey)

Visual images can illuminate concepts. Nowhere is that more true than in this passage. Isaiah paints two pictures of fear and how God responds to each.
