Schutt also serves InterVarsity Christian Fellowship as the national coordinator of its Law School Ministry. He is the author of Redeeming Law: Christian Calling and the Legal Profession (InterVarsity Press, 2007), an exhortation to students and lawyers on Christian integrity in the law. Schutt writes and travels for ICLS from his home in Mount Pleasant, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Lisa, and their three children. Before joining the Regent Law faculty, he practiced law in Fort Worth, Texas. He is an honors graduate of the University of Texas School of Law.

Program Summary

Ours is a bold claim: one may be called to the law and there flourish through faithful service as a lawyer, judge, or professor.

The Law Track at FC08 will explore the implications of this claim. We’ll discuss, among other things, the allure of power and prestige as well as rival visions of human flourishing implicit in the profession. We’ll contrast the withering that often envelops lawyers and law students — whether it be burnout, materialism, apathy, or the like — with a robust vision of the lawyer’s calling. We’ll look for hints of grace in the historical and theological roots of law itself, and we’ll ask whether law, in our sinful hands, bears any relationship to God’s law. We will also consider whether law itself contributes to human flourishing and how we might practice law in ways that encourage and sustain that flourishing in the communities in which God has placed us.

We’ll challenge both lawyers and law students to first discern and then cheerfully embrace their calling to the law, trusting that God will use their calling to love their neighbors through them. Come join hundreds of students and practitioners as we gather to discuss, pray, and process these issues surrounding the lawyer’s calling.
