Program Summary
Journalism and media pervade and dominate our cultural landscape — and that’s not a bad thing.
Through the press and popular media, we are inspired to speak our minds; to rebuild broken homes, communities, and countries; and to hold our elected leaders accountable for their actions. Through the press and popular media, institutions that give our society meaning, purpose, and structure advance their agendas, messages, and visions.
Even our conceptions and dreams of human flourishing are derived largely from our media-saturated world.
Join us for a critical and highly creative examination of the news, information, and images that massively influence the fabric of our society and our every-day actions. We will investigate some of the most significant issues and trends affecting both the professionals who work in newsrooms and editing bays and the people who consume their work.
Among the questions we’ll discuss:
- Why should Christians enter the fields of journalism and filmmaking?
- What are the necessary competencies in character and craft for anyone wanting to exemplify “human flourishing” in journalism and media?
- How should the Christian community engage the secular media? How should it champion the production of news and movies that exhibit human flourishing?
- How can people honor Jesus while presenting views that violate their conscience?
- How could new technologies be used creatively to produce and distribute news and information that changes the world for the better?
This fast-paced and highly interactive track of programs will aim to challenge and inspire you. It will feature veterans of film and news production, freewheeling conversation, and more-focused small-group interaction. Participants will be assigned to craft a story on deadline and should be prepared to share tips, tricks, and information about the technologies and tools they use to produce great work.
