"Bring to This Desk"

A Prayer for Wisdom

by Charles H. Troutman, Jr.

Charles Troutman (an pioneer of IVCF in the 1930s) wrote, "There is no place like the university for the sharpening and expansion of Christian faith." Here is a prayer he wrote in 1960 which brings that grand vision down to each individual's desk.

O Sovereign Lord, Almighty Father,
Creator of heaven and earth
bring to this desk
the information I need.

Lighten my darkness and
by thy great mercy
cause me to perceive accurately.

Deliver me
from hidden insincerities,
from betrayal or flattery of friends,
from cowardice and laziness,
from arrogance and inaction.

Grant thy Spirit
to guard my tongue
that no words of mine
may be unfit for the present need.

Then take my very best
and make it good enough for thee.

Amen

A Prayer before Study
When our lives become more hectic and intense with the pressure of academic work, the need for prayer deepens even if it is harder to come by.

A Guided Sabbath
We shared a sabbath together at Following Christ 2002, and this original guide by Sarah MacDonald and Jay Sivits is still a helpful aid for ceasing, seeing, and celebrating.
