Bibliography for Christian Women in the Academy

This bibliography addresses the challenges faced by women who are pursuing their calling within the academy, covering topics such as identity, spiritual formation, vocation (generally and in an academic setting), partnership, family, and community. Some books listed here also deal with issues encountered by women whose vocational calling places them within church and para-church ministries.

Fraser's narrative account links her upbringing with the issues she was compelled to grapple with in adulthood and in her graduate work.

Chapter 4 concisely addresses listening, nurturing, and the impacts of marginality and abuse upon women's spiritual experience.

A Catholic scholar explores and develops the notion of voice and provides helpful reflection exercises to this end.

A pastoral discussion of the redemptive and transforming salience of the Cross for those suffering.

Brilliant observations and an often satirical critique of the inconsistency of the church's practice with its profession.

A good general framework for understanding calling.

This must-read is a rare combination of compelling philosophical and inspiring pastoral arguments that affirm the interaction of the Spirit with the mind in hearing God's voice and discerning God's will.

Formerly pastor of spiritual formation at Willow Creek, Barton writes compellingly and practically from her own experience and journey as a woman leader working closely with male colleagues. 

Becker, Carol E. Becoming Colleagues: Women and Men Serving Together in Faith. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2000.

Based on research on mixed gender teams in a variety of faith-based institutional settings, Becker identifies nine criteria, reflective and active, that are the hallmark of mature, effective partnerships between men and women.

Penner, Carol, ed. Women and Men: Gender in the Church. Scottdale, Penn.: Mennonite Publishing House, 1998.

Volf, Miroslav. Exclusion and Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation. Nashville: Abingdon, 1997.

Volf reflects on alienation and the process of restoration, particularly when it involves embracing the enemy, from the viewpoint of God's self-donation. Chapter 4 discusses gender relations.

Malcolm reflects on her missionary parents' co-equal model of marriage, parenting, and ministry.
