African Fellowships

In 1998, the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students in English-speaking Africa sent six delegates to Following Christ/Shaping Our World, InterVarsity's national conference for graduate students and faculty. Since that time, Dr. Watson Omulokoli, Professor of History at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, has been nurturing the emergence of graduate fellowships and reviving faculty groups in a number of countries.

Today, in 2005, Kenyatta University has the largest, most active graduate-student fellowship on the African continent. Last October, they held a luncheon to welcome first-year graduate students, and 120 students and faculty attended. A faculty fellowship of about fifteen Christian faculty meets regularly, and its newest members are young scholars who were leaders in the graduate fellowship and are now academic staff. The Kenyan graduate executive committee oversees six graduate-student fellowships and organizes two conferences each year.

The graduate-student and faculty fellowships at Kenyatta University have inspired the formation of others throughout English-speaking Africa, and there are now fellowships in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. Dr. Omulokoli continues to offer his time — up to two months each year — to advancing new fellowships.

Give thanks to God for:

  • The thriving fellowships that have been established throughout Kenya and, in particular, at Kenyatta University.
  • The spread of fellowships to several other countries in English-speaking Africa.
  • Graduate students who continue to be involved as faculty members.

Please pray that:

  • God would continue to raise up leaders for these growing African fellowships.
  • Graduate students and faculty would reach out to their peers, sharing with them the good news of the gospel and inviting them to share in the life of their communities.
  • God would provide staff to work with new fellowships, particularly the five emerging fellowships in South Africa.
  • Dr. Omulokoli would continue to be effective in his efforts to develop new fellowships as he travels to Nigeria and South Africa.
