Reflections on the 2006 Faculty Conference
| If you've never attended a Faculty Conference at Cedar Campus, we want to help you understand what you're missing! Several participants from 2006 have graciously allowed us to share their reflections on what a week at Cedar Campus with other Christian faculty meant in their lives. |
"As a Christian professor on a secular campus, I found the 2006 InterVarsity National Faculty Conference to be a challenging experience. I left with a deep sense of the need for providing clarity for a Christian worldview with a focus on financial management. As a father of six children, Cedar Campus is a marvelous facility to grow closer to my family and understand God’s ministry call for our family. Thanks for such a great experience."

"The InterVarsity Faculty Conference was a time of unexpected relaxation in the midst of a busy academic schedule. I was renewed through unhurried times of communion with the Lord and refreshed by new friendships with like-minded colleagues from across the nation. The sessions were intellectually and spiritually engaging, leaving me with a fuller understanding of the practical connections between Christian theology and academic vocation. What a rare combination of academic exploration, fellowship, and rest!"

"The Faculty Conference at Cedar Campus provides an opportunity to be refreshed and re-energized for the work to which God has called us. The fellowship with others who are making the journey, the times of teaching and sharing, and the wonder of God's creation all make for a time to recapture the vision for God's work on colleges and universities. It is also a wonderful way for families to have a true vacation together. Over the years, our family has enjoyed the children's program, the waterfront, and the hiking, along with some of the local attractions. There is something for everyone at all stages of life."

"The week was wonderful for our family. We ate, sang, and hiked together with new and old friends. We had time for lingering conversations and space to roam out to 'Narnia' and along other trails in the pristine woods and pines of northern Michigan. We celebrated the Word of creation, of Scripture, and of Christ. As always, Cedar Campus is a gift and a reminder to abide."

"I wanted to say how much I was encouraged and refreshed by the Cedar Campus Faculty Conference this past summer. I met old and new friends and colleagues. There was just the right mix of worship, lectures, and time for fellowship and adventure. There is nothing more encouraging for a Christian scholar than to spend a week with others sharing their work and views. I would call it a mix of a God-ordained interdisciplinary think tank and beautiful vacation all in one."

"I was in deep reverse culture shock having been back in the States less than three months [when I attended the Faculty Conference at Cedar Campus]. During one of the excellent messages — an exposition of Scripture — I found myself suddenly and surprisingly filling with emotion. I couldn't understand it at all. There was no statement or verse to trigger it. Then I realized what I was feeling. I was deeply moved by the circumstance of being with fellow believers, serious about faith and their disciplines, gathered around God's Word. I was deeply moved because there, for the first time, I was home."

"On the first evening of the Faculty Conference, a quote by a former staff member was cited. Edward Clowney's words regarding the consistency of God’s presence at Cedar Campus proved to be prophetic as time and again during the week, I sensed discernment from God 'at the water's edge.' It had been ten years since my last visit to Cedar Campus, and this time was especially noteworthy for the opportunities it presented to reconnect with friends my wife and I had first met there in 1996. One afternoon, we took a hike with several of these friends. We went to 'Narnia,' a place of exceptional natural beauty on Lake Huron, and experienced a time of unhurried, Christ-centered conversation 'at the water's edge.'
"One afternoon, a speaker had us gather stones on the beach from which we created a path and a memorial to God's presence 'at the water’s edge.' These stones became increasingly meaningful for me as the week progressed. I also passed another collection of gathered stones that week on my hikes. These stones had been previously collected by children who then had decorated them with various thoughts and designs and left them for others to see. They were both intriguing and inspiring for me."
