History of Faculty Ministry
| A brief history of InterVarsity Faculty Ministry's first thirty years. |

InterVarsity began intentional ministry among faculty in 1975 when Dr. Charles Hummel joined staff to serve as the Director of Faculty Ministry, after a number of other posts within InterVarsity and the academy, including a college presidency. He served in this post fourteen years, utilizing an itinerant model of ministry which allowed him to canvass the country so as to meet and encourage faculty and faculty fellowships across the U.S. Under his leadership, faculty ministries were established on an initial ten campuses.
Upon Dr. Hummel’s retirement in 1990, Dr. Terry Morrison was appointed to the position, and continued to itinerant across the country, encouraging the existing faculty fellowships and helping to establish new fellowships. Due to his long-standing, tireless and very fruitful labor of love, a total of forty campuses boasted Christian faculty communities, and there exists a great deal of goodwill toward InterVarsity among Christian faculty nationwide. Terry stepped down as Director in December 2003.
Stan Wallace was named the third Director of Faculty Ministry, effective January 1, 2004. The ministry Terry entrusted to Stan was strong and healthy, poised to take the next step toward fuller breadth and depth. A number of factors converge to offer a bright future and great opportunity for InterVarsity Faculty Ministry. Faculty Ministry enjoys strong support from InterVarsity leadership, beginning with the President, Alec Hill (who served as a business school dean himself just prior to accepting the InterVarsity Presidency). Furthermore, ministry to faculty is part of InterVarsity’s Purpose and Vision Statements, subscribed to by our staff serving across the country. Furthermore, the Core Values and Commitments of InterVarsity include such fundamental commitments as the need to have a redeeming influence in the academy, discipleship of the mind, leadership development and whole-life stewardship, all values strategically advanced by the development of Faculty Ministry. These factors indicate the commitment of InterVarsity to the aims and ends of Faculty Ministry, and indicate how the growth of Faculty Ministry significantly advances the aims and ends of InterVarsity’s overall Vision and Purpose in the years to come.
