Introducing the Faculty Ministry Leadership Team

Have you met the new Faculty Ministry Leadership Team? Together, they are re-envisioning InterVarsity's ministry among faculty. Already, they have drafted a mission statement that will guide the future development of the ministry. We'd like to introduce them to you, following the picture from right to left, and offer their prayer requests for this season of life and work.

InterVarsity is grateful to God for bringing these people together to advance his purposes among faculty.

FM LT

Stan Wallace, Director

Stan was officially appointed the Director of InterVarsity's Faculty Ministry on January 1, 2003. When asked why he accepted this role, he said, "For many years God has burdened my heart with the needs of faculty, and this position was a way to meet those needs using my gifts and experiences." Previously, Stan had served as an Area Director for Graduate & Faculty Ministries in the Gulf States.

Stan's favorite book is Scaling the Secular City: A Defense of Christianity by J. P. Moreland. His favorite thing to do when he's not working is playing with his kids, and when he was little himself, he dreamed of becoming an attorney.

Please pray that God would provide Stan with protection and blessing, the resources he needs to best serve faculty, and wisdom in leading the Faculty Ministry Leadership Team through their strategic planning process.

Howard Van Cleave, Associate Director for Program Development

Howard comes to InterVarsity with thirty-four years of ministry experience with a multinational Christian organization. He decided to join the Faculty Ministry Leadership Team, in part, because he wanted to help shape the mission, strategy, and tactics that will determine the future of faculty ministry in InterVarsity.

Howard's all-time favorite books are Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. When he was a child, he dreamed of growing up to be a cowboy or logging truck driver. Today, his favorite pastimes are making things with his hands, drawing, whittling, and painting.

Please pray that Howard would develop strong relationships with many InterVarsity staff around the country and that these new friendships would grow in mutual love and a shared vision to influence the world for Christ.

Tom Trevethan, Special Projects Associate

Tom has served with InterVarsity since 1967, working at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor since 1979 and as an Area Director in Michigan for many years. Over time, it had become increasingly clear to Tom that ministry among faculty was a missing piece at Ann Arbor, and the invitation to join the Faculty Ministry Leadership Team has been a welcome surprise — one that corresponds to his own sense of mission to the whole university.

Books that Tom is likely to re-read most often include Martin Luther's The Bondage of the Will, Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings, Calvin's The Institutes of the Christian Religion, and the poems of George Herbert. As a kid, he dreamed of being a football player with the New York Giants. Among his pastimes are carpentry and choral singing.

Please pray for the Lord's power and direction as Tom launches a more formal ministry among faculty at the University of Michigan and that God would unite him and the rest of this team in ministry to the university.

Nan Thomas, Associate Director for the South/Central Region

Nan serves on the Faculty Ministry Leadership Team and in two roles at Union University — as Adjunct Faculty in Political Science and as the Associate Director of Faculty Development. For many years, she has desired to work with more faculty, encouraging them to view all of their work as discipleship to Jesus Christ. For this reason, she joined the Faculty Ministry Leadership Team.

Her favorite book, at the moment, is Thomas Merton's Thoughts in Solitude. Like Stan, when she was a child, she wanted to be a lawyer. Gardening is one of her favorite hobbies.

Please pray that Nan would be faithful to pray for and care for her family and at the same time be clear in the priorities of her work with faculty.

Terry Morrison, Director Emeritus

Terry stepped down from his role as Director of Faculty Ministry at the end of 2002, but the team is grateful that he continues to meet with them, offering his considerable experience and knowledge to their planning and discussions. Terry continues to work with faculty around the country and especially at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He also remains the editor of InterVarsity's bi-annual Faculty Newsletter.

Jim Cook, Associate Director for the West Region

Before joining InterVarsity, Jim worked with Christian Leadership Ministries of Campus Crusade, helping to advance communities of Christian faculty on secular campuses. He has also taught ethics and a history-of-ideas course at Colorado Christian University and at Dayspring Christian Study Center in Boulder, Colorado.

As a youngster, Jim was inspired by Russian high-jumper Valery Brumel and vowed he would set the high-jump record someday. While Jim never achieved that particular goal, he did attend the University of Missouri on a track scholarship as a high jumper. Among his favorite things to do are coaching athletic teams, skiing, and watching classical cinema.

Please pray for the health of Jim's family after five years of difficult health issues and for Jim as he transitions to staff with InterVarsity.
