Emerging Evangelical Intelligentsia Survey

Dear Member of the Emerging Scholars Network:

Under the leadership of world-renowned sociologist Peter L. Berger and under the auspices of the Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs of Boston University, we are studying the formation, scholarly output, and the intellectual and cultural impact of academics and intellectuals who identify themselves as Christians and broadly as “evangelicals.” The premise of this study is that a growing number of evangelicals are drawing on their faith to shape domains of American life in which they have not traditionally been influential, including the academy, mainstream journalism, policy discourse, and debate among public intellectuals. For more information on the project, click here.

Whether or not you consider yourself an evangelical, you can be of enormous assistance to our study. Through an online, anonymous survey, we are seeking to collect data about how evangelical and other Christian intellectuals and scholars conceive of the relationship between their faith and their intellectual work. We therefore welcome the participation of evangelical and non-evangelical scholars and intellectuals alike (though we emphasize that for our purposes “evangelicals” can include people with a wide variety of church or denominational affiliations, including Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican.)

With the approval of the leadership of the Emerging Scholars Network, we are inviting you as a member of the Network to participate in this study. However, your participation is strictly voluntary.

To participate in the survey, click on this link or copy and paste it into your web browser – http://www.bu.edu/cura/eeip/secureserver/surveylogin.

To enter the survey, you must enter the following security code:

PHvM0iYD5wEKfd7PEQwsMEuyT (case sensitive)

The code is designed to ensure the security of the survey. The same code is being provided to all invited participants and in no way can identify you individually or be linked with your responses.

The questionnaire should take no more than 30-40 minutes of your time. After you log into the survey, you will have the option of downloading a PDF of the survey to preview the questions; as well, you will be able to start the survey, pause, confidentially save your answers, and then return to complete the survey at a later time. You may complete the questionnaire anonymously or you may optionally enter information on the last three questions that will identify you with your answers. All of your individual responses will be kept confidential and will be seen only by our research team.

In addition, should you wish to submit more extensive reflections about the relationship between faith and intellectual pursuits, we would be delighted to receive them. You will have the opportunity at the end of the survey to list relevant websites you would like us to look at. As well, you are invited to send pertinent documents to us by email.

Your responses will not be quoted or publicized in any way without your prior, written consent. Should you have any questions or concerns, please send them to Dr. James Wallace or Dr. Timothy Shah. Thank you in advance for your willingness to be a part of our research efforts.

Sincerely,

Timothy S. Shah, Principal Investigator and James C. Wallace, Senior Researcher
