About the Speaker
Stephen J. Nichols (Ph.D., Westminster Theological Seminary) is professor of theology and church history at Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is the co-editor of “The Legacy of Jonathan Edwards: American Religion and the Evangelical Tradition” and the author of many books, including “The Reformation: How a Monk and a Mallet Changed the World” and “For Us and for Our Salvation: The Doctrine of Christ in the Early Church.” He chairs the American Christianity section of the Evangelical Theological Society.
Abstract
Resistance to Christ in the academy sometimes has more to do with misrepresentations and caricatures of Christ than with Christ himself. Is he a Republican or Democrat? An American patriot or a global guru? In this talk we will explore the dangers of lassoing Christ to our agendas, asking what it might take to free him from cultural captivities.
Additional Events in the Morning

We also welcome you to join Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ for their morning worship services (8:30 am, 11 am) where Stephen will preach on “To Whom Shall We Go?” (John 6:66-69) and present on “Jesus Made in America: Honest Looks, Honorable Responses” during their adult elective time between the services (10 – 10:45 am).
Abstract for adult elective: “Jesus appears just about everywhere in American culture, from vinyl (remember when?) to the silver screen, from jewelry to (yes!) rubber duckies. We’ll look at some of these cultural sightings, asking how these both hinder and help the gospel, as well as our own understanding of Jesus.”
