Call for Papers: "The Professor as Pilgrim"

Announcing: A call for papers for "The Professor as Pilgrim," a conference on student and faculty mentoring from a Christian
perspective, to be held in Minneapolis on September 24, 2005.
Deadline for submission: May 30, 2005
The purpose of the conference is to further the understanding
and practice of mentoring, especially as it relates to the
development of Christian scholars in the academy.
The conference organizers seek papers:
- on the theory of mentoring from a pedagogical, psychological,
sociological, or other relevant perspective
- on the practice of mentoring from a practical perspective
(including case studies)
- outlining the resources available for the mentoring process
Successful submissions will exemplify a clear integration
of Christian thought, including the use of biblical and theological
resources. Papers will be welcomed from junior and senior researchers
and practitioners alike. Selected papers may be published online
or in book form.
Sample topics:
- How Christian scholars shape the lives of their students
(descriptive), and how they should (normative)
- The differences between Christian scholars' mentoring and
non-Christians'
- Historical lessons gained from studying the impact of Christian
scholars
- Challenges that Christian scholars face in their efforts
to shape mentored scholars' lives
- Student evaluation of the impact of Christian scholars
on their lives
- The example of Jesus Christ and the instruction inherent
within the biblical text
- The impact of Christian scholars in terms of (a) intellectual
discipleship; (b) academic socialization; (c) lifestyle mentoring;
and (d) Christian devotion
- Issues involved in cross-cultural mentoring
- How a Christian perspective impacts the Christian scholar's
syllabus
Submissions should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words. Include
a short biography or vita. We are also
accepting extended abstracts (500-1,000 words) in lieu of completed
papers.
