Call for Papers: "The Professor as Pilgrim"
Date: May 30, 2005
Hosted by: The MacLaurin Institute, the Emerging Scholars Network, and Christian Leadership Ministries

Announcing: A call for papers for "The Professor as Pilgrim," a conference on student and faculty mentoring from a Christian perspective, to be held in Minneapolis on September 24, 2005.

Deadline for submission: May 30, 2005

The purpose of the conference is to further the understanding and practice of mentoring, especially as it relates to the development of Christian scholars in the academy.

The conference organizers seek papers:

  • on the theory of mentoring from a pedagogical, psychological, sociological, or other relevant perspective
  • on the practice of mentoring from a practical perspective (including case studies)
  • outlining the resources available for the mentoring process

Successful submissions will exemplify a clear integration of Christian thought, including the use of biblical and theological resources. Papers will be welcomed from junior and senior researchers and practitioners alike. Selected papers may be published online or in book form.

Sample topics:

  • How Christian scholars shape the lives of their students (descriptive), and how they should (normative)
  • The differences between Christian scholars' mentoring and non-Christians'
  • Historical lessons gained from studying the impact of Christian scholars
  • Challenges that Christian scholars face in their efforts to shape mentored scholars' lives
  • Student evaluation of the impact of Christian scholars on their lives
  • The example of Jesus Christ and the instruction inherent within the biblical text
  • The impact of Christian scholars in terms of (a) intellectual discipleship; (b) academic socialization; (c) lifestyle mentoring; and (d) Christian devotion
  • Issues involved in cross-cultural mentoring
  • How a Christian perspective impacts the Christian scholar's syllabus

Submissions should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words. Include a short biography or vita. We are also accepting extended abstracts (500-1,000 words) in lieu of completed papers.

Submit papers by email to maclaurin@maclaurin.org (single-spaced in Word or WordPerfect). Inquiries regarding paper submissions should be directed to Charles Clauss.

If you prefer to send your manuscript by postal mail, please include an electronic file with the hard copy and mail to: The MacLaurin Institute, PO Box 141007, Minneapolis MN 55414.
