Francis Collins at OSU
Date: Nov 14, 2007

As one of the world's leading scientists, Dr. Francis Collins, director of the Human Genome Project, has personally discovered some of the scientific evidence for the common descent of all living creatures. Yet, he is also a man of unshakable faith in God and Scripture, believing that God cares about us and can intervene in human affairs. He has worked on methods of crossing large stretches of DNA to identify disease genes, coining the term "positional cloning." Incorporating his faith, Collins proposes a new synthesis, a new way to think about an active, caring God who created mankind through evolutionary processes. He calls this BioLogos — life through the Word. His book, The Language of God, is currently in its eighth printing and had a seven-week run on the New York Times best-seller list.

Lecture: The Language of God

Time: 4:00 pm
Location: 131 Hitchcock Hall (on OSU main campus)

Immediately following, a reception will be hosted by The Veritas Forum at OSU in the area outside the lecture hall.

The Intersection of Faith & Evolution: A Civil Dialogue

Time: 7:30 pm
Location: COSI, 33 W. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215

Can science support religious views? Where do science and religion overlap? How is religion compatible with scientific thinking? Hear a spirited panel discussion on this engaging topic with Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and author of the book The Language of God; Dr. Jeffrey McKee of the OSU Department of Anthropology; Dr. David Ruppe, a scholar of religion; Dr. Patricia Princehouse of the Case Western Reserve Department of Philosophy; and moderated by WOSU's Fred Andrle.

The event is free and open to the public, but in order to get a place in the audience at the live event, please call 614-228-COSI, extension 2541. Your name will be placed on a list, which will be checked when you enter the door. There will be no tickets; only the phone call is necessary. Call today for reservations.

Overflow Location: We anticipate that the COSI event will fill up quickly. A live video broadcast of the evening program will be available at the Fawcett Center on the OSU campus with ample free parking. Please plan to attend here if the venue at COSI is full or if it is more convenient for you. The Fawcett Center is located at 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43210, and its phone number is 614-292-3238.

Books: Dr. Collins's book will be available at both events at a 10% discount. Cash or checks only.
