For Such a Time as This

The Role of Christian Scholars in Today's Postmodern Academy

William Wilberforce. Dietrich Bonhoeffer. St. Patrick. St. Benedict. C. S. Lewis. Mother Teresa. Martin Luther. All these figures made a profound and lasting impact on our world because they were faithful to the call that Christ placed on their lives during the times in which they lived.

Similarly, God is calling many of his people today to be redeeming influences as Christian scholars in a highly secularized and pluralistic academy. What does it mean to be faithful to that call? How do we understand the times in which we live? And how can we deepen our souls and develop our minds in such a context?

This conference will provide an opportunity for Christian faculty and students interested in pursuing faculty careers to gather from across southern California and be challenged to think about these questions:

  • How can we make a difference in the academy?
  • How can we be an influence for Christ?
  • How can we make our lives matter?

Our Speaker

Our speaker, James Emery White, is both a pastor and an academic. He is the founding and senior pastor of Mecklenburg Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, and he currently serves on the Board of Reference at Union University and as the adjunct professor of Christian Theology, Culture, and Apologetics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte.

An international speaker, Dr. White is the author of eleven books including Serious Times: Making Your Life Matter in an Urgent Day, A Search for the Spiritual Life, Life Defining Moments, Long Night's Journey into Day, Embracing the Mysterious God, and The Prayer God Longs For.

Registration Deadline: February 14, 2006
